Minami-ke / ~Okawari~ | Yes, definitely more please :D
So it’s been a while since I’ve done an anime post so pardon me if I do something incredibly strange.
BUT I shall attempt to keep in form with my previous rants (oh yeah, that’s what I called them) and shall proceed to type whil eating the leftover chocolate cake from my father’s birthdaycake, piled with peeno mango ice cream; sipping on Coke Zero; listening to YUI’s ‘Namidairo’ on repeat CSI season 8 playing in the other tab…

Minami-ke. There are a few things that come to mind when I think of this series:
Pigtails
Hair-bulbs
‘Baka-yaro’
The desire to own a shirt with ‘I AM BOSS’ printed on the front
Haruka-nee-sama
Lucky Star and Ichigo Marshmallow
BTW, I did just realize that I have blogged about 2 episodes of the series but this is an overview so this will contain spoilers from both seasons of the anime. Just y’know… a warning.
IF you didn’t know already, Minami-ke follows the ordinary lives of the 3 Minami sisters. Only when I type ‘ordinary’ I mean, ‘anything but’.

Let’s start with Kana- just because she’s my favorite (and I say that with difficulty). If you can imagine Tomo from ‘Azudai’, Konata from ‘Lucky Star’, Miu from ‘Ichigo Marshmallow’ and a little bit of May from ‘Kaleido Star’ you know exactly who I’m talking about. Outspoken, loud and without shame, Kana is the middle child… y’know, the one that supposedly never gets any attention. Yeah, right. Over half the show is Kana and her freakishly hilarious antics ranging from purposely inducing a cold and chasing around her younger sister to plant a big, fat, wet one on her.

To me, Kana pretty much carried the entire show. And I can bet you anything, ANYone who watched the series, did so anticipating what the hell the crazy girl would do next.
On to Chiaki-hime. The youngest of the sisters yet acts like the teenager. 3 episodes into the first season you find out her favorite word is ‘Bakayaro’ and her least favorite person is Kana. Y’know how I said Kana carried the show? Yes well she wouldn’t have been able to do that without Chiaki. The interaction between these 2 is the result of over half of Kana’s said antics which I mentioned before.

Oh, and may i add Chihara Minori’s voice was perfect for the character
The eldest one. MInami Haruka. I don’t want to say she was my least favorite but all the humor based around her was actually provided by the creepy guy in the other class who is facinated by sweat and that can’t keep his shirt on. /shudder.

Yes, she’s wonderful, she cooks and cleans and takes care of the family (god knows where their parents are) she’s near perfect… actually, she IS perfect. Too bad I prefer ‘fatally flawed’ over ‘perfect’.
Like other slice-of-life shows similar it itself, Minami-ke can’t really be summurized very well. I actually wished SpAZbub had been bothered to blog individual episodes because there was so much pointless crap worth blogging about (that my friends, is called a paradox) that can’t be compressed into a couple of paragraphs.

I can however safely say that for an anime of it’s genre, it was definitely one of the better ones. There wasn’t one boring episode, it succeeded in being hilariously cute without any ridiculous fanservice AND it didn’t even have to dip it’s toe into the otaku zone as Lucky Star did (I’m not saying it didn’t work but it was different yet just as funny).

When I first heard of ‘Minami-ke ~Okawari~’ (which technically was almost the same time I heard about the first part) I was under the impression that it was an alternate re-telling of what happened in the first season. This both excited yet disappointed me. It excited me as I was watching the first series, then disappointed me when it ended since I wanted to know what happened next. Anyway, turns out it was a continuation of the first series which I was fine with.
Also, ‘~Okarwari~’ was animated by a different company. I have different view for either of the animation styles. For the first season it was simpler and I thought it fit with the type of anime it was a little better. However, I’m always appreciative of a little more detailed animation which made me get over the new style for the second season.

So… overall? One of the better series that season and definitely a must watch if you enjoy slice-of-life/comedies without boundless fanservice. Go watch, I demand it… because I AM BOSS!
Ja, mata ne ~
